In June 2023, I made the hardest decision of my life — I got sober. Alcohol had taken too much from me, and I knew if I didn’t change, I’d lose everything that mattered.
But sobriety isn’t just about quitting something. It’s about finding something bigger to move toward. For me, that was triathlon.
With nothing but YouTube videos and random internet articles, I trained for my first sprint triathlon. I thought I was ready. But when race day came in September 2023, I panicked in the water… and I failed the swim.
Most people would have quit. But I knew I couldn’t go back to who I was. A week later, I hired a coach, committed to the process, and trained for 8 months.
In May 2024, I jumped off a raft into the Tennessee River to start my first IRONMAN 70.3. It took me 6 hours and 34 minutes, but I crossed that finish line. Three months later, I raced again — and beat my time by over an hour. In October 2025, I reached my goal of a sub-5 hour race with a 4:59 in for IRONMAN 70.3 NC.
That’s what happens when you stop doing it the hard way and start training with a plan.
Today, I’m not just an athlete — I’m a husband, a dad of two daughters, and a leader in my family. Every mile I train, every finish line I cross, is about showing them what’s possible when you refuse to quit.
And now, I coach other busy parents to do the same — not just to race, but to lead their families by example.
